June 12-13…CT Breeze Tournament …15 Red
The CT Starters 15 Red took the floor after a weekend off against Team CT in the CT Breeze Tournament held at Sacred Heart University. The start was strong and Team CT was not able to respond. 15 Red worked hard and found themselves at the half up 16, 31-15. It was a very balanced effort, but Haley Cole started the run and scored 13 points. Kathleen McCormack and Olivia Sutherland both chipped in with 6 points and Genelle Green had 10 points and 7 steals. With only 5 turnovers for the game, the Starters went on to win easily with a final score of 52-24.
The second game on Saturday afternoon was against the Blazers. It didn’t take long for 15 Red to get it going again for the second time of the day. Our guest appearances from Sarah Raftery and Rachel Karlins were very helpful with Sarah pulling down 8 defensive boards and Rachel scoring 10 points. Haley Northrup did a great job on the post offensively scoring 6 points and defensively coming up with 5 steals. The Starters took the early lead with a half time score of 26-6 and stayed strong in the second half finishing the game with a score of 60-18. It was a great day for 15 Red going 2-0.
Sunday afternoon was a rematch against the R.I. Breakers that they had faced a couple weeks ago and handled pretty well. The beginning was back and forth baskets and the Starters were not playing their best basketball. The first half ended in the favor of the Starters, 19-11. However, the Starters wanted more in the second half. They played more as a team and found their flow better than in the first half. Genelle Green chipped in with 13 points and five steals and Haley Cole added 10 points. Maggie Donohue had seven rebounds and four steals. Olivia Sutherland had a complete game with 6 points, 5 rebounds, and four assists. 15 Red finished strong and held on for their third victory of the weekend with a final score of 50-34.
There was one more team left in the path of the Starters having a 4-0 weekend. The Bronx Running Rebels were going to do whatever it took to stop 15 Red. The Starters came out very flat and found themselves struggling in every aspect of their game. Kristen Van Gilst gave some relief hitting two 3’s to give the Starters some life. At one point, the deficit was seven points before working their way back to only a one point deficit at the half, 27-28. It wasn’t until about half way through the second half that the Starters turned it on and took control of the game. Haley Cole found ways to score her 18 points only missing one shot from the floor. Rachel Karlins went 4-4 from the free throw line and so did Olivia Sutherland. Haley Northrup and Sarah Raftery took control of the boards and each pulled down 7 rebounds. After a feisty second half, the Starters fought back and held on to the win with a final score of 60-48.
It was a nice 4-0 weekend for the 15 Red. They were much needed wins and the girls worked hard for them. We would like to thank Sarah and Rachel for helping us out this weekend and we would also like to wish Jackie Riera a speedy recovery. We will see you all Wednesday 6-8 at East…Great Job this weekend girls!!!
