       Starters 15 Red…July 23-25…New Haven, CT
The Starters 15 Red took the floor in their last tournament together at the New Haven field house on Friday afternoon against the Rhode Island Breakers. We came out flat and found ourselves in a hole early with the half time score 32-20. The Starters had a better second half but it was not enough. The final score was 63-41.
Game two was on Saturday against the CBC. The game started with 15 Red dominating both ends of the floor with the score at the half being 13-4. The CBC is a very good basketball team and the girls were proud of holding them to only four points in the first half, but they also knew the game was far from over. Our defense became lax and the fouls piled up against a very good free throw shooting team. The lead disappeared quickly because CBC kept sinking their free throws. It was a very hard fought game by both teams, but the CBC came out on top with a final score of 33-27. Genelle Green scored 17 points and had 5 steals. Rachel Franzluebbers had four offensive rebounds and Haley Cole had five defensive rebounds.
The third game of the weekend against Team CT we decided had to be a win. It was an ugly start to the game, but then the Starters woke up and took control outscoring their opponent 24-11 by half time. Megan Schuppe went 4-4 from the free throw line and had a total of 10 points. Genelle Green led all scoring with 17 points and Maggie Donohue had 7 rebounds and 4 assists to help the team out. It was the first win of the weekend and the Starters were hoping it was not going to be the last. The final score was 52-26.
The first game Sunday the Starters faced off against the N.J. Sting. 15 Red was determined to end their season on three wins and the Sting were not about to stop them. The Starters came out fighting and built themselves a comfortable lead going into the half, 27-12. Genelle Green stayed offensively strOng for the third game in a row scoring 16 with 7 rebounds and 8 steals. Olivia Sutherland scored 8 points and did an outstanding job on the boards with a total of 10 rebounds. Haley Northrup helped control the boards with 6 and also had 2 steals. Kristen Van Gilst went 6-8 from the free throw line for a total of 10 points with 6 rebounds. The Starters coasted in the second half to their second win of the weekend with a final score of 45-29.
The final game for 15 Red was a rematch of the team that knocked them out in the state tournament. There was a lot to prove and when the game started it looked like the Starters were going to fall again to the Shelton Spiders (used to be Cougars). The Starters found themselves in familiar territory at the half down 27-18. However, the game was far from over and the Starters were going to fight until the end. With a switch up on the defensive end and a COMPLETE team effort 15 Red went on their best run of their season together. Genelle Green got it done again with 25 points and 7 rebounds. Maggie Donohue played a great game and had 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and 9 points. Rachel Franzluebbers played the best game of our season together and scored 7 points and had 7 rebounds. Haley Northrup had 4 points with 6 rebounds and Olivia Sutherland had a solid game with 8 points while handling some intense defensive pressure at the point. Haley Cole chipped in with 5 rebounds and 4 steals. The Starters did an excellent job in the second half and took the lead and never looked back. The third and final victory of the weekend that meant way more than just another win was finalized in the scorebook with a 53-41 score in favor of 15 Red!
This weekend was a great way to end our season together. Our final game together was won because of an entire team effort. Coach and I hope you all enjoyed our time together as much as we did. We wish all the girls success in their high school seasons. Enjoy the rest of the summer and we hope to see you all soon. A very sincere thank you to both our team and their parents for a great summer!
