Women's DIII News has selected Springfield College senior forward Becky Kanupka to its honorable mention All-America team for women's basketball. Kanupka, who hails from Rocky Hill, Conn., overcame her third ACL injury in three years to earn New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player-of-the-Year and ECAC New England First-Team All-Star honors this season.
Kanupka missed the first seven games in order to rehabilitate her left knee, and made her first appearance against Bates on Jan. 2. SC was 12-1 after Kanupka regained her spot in the starting line-up in a 69-62 win at Wheaton on Jan. 26. Kanupka, who has won two NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week Awards, was the Pride's top rebounder (7.2) and third-leading scorer (9.7). As a freshman in the 1998-1999 season, she was the ECAC Division III New England and New England Basketball Coaches' Association Rookie of the Year.
The Pride (25-4) finished No. 19 in the final USA Today/ESPN/Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III Poll. SC, which swept the NEWMAC regular-season and tournament titles for the second consecutive season, reached the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 and lost to then second-ranked Bowdoin, 64-50, in Blake Arena (March 8).
The Pride set a school record for wins and consecutive wins (17), which was the third longest winning streak in Division III during the 2001-2002 season.
